The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic version of a drug called Nexium to treat frequent heartburn that occurs every 6 to 8 weeks, said FDA spokesman Joseph Stiglitz.

The drug works by decreasing acid production in the stomach, which helps to relieve symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux. Nexium is approved to treat frequent heartburn in adults and children aged 2 to 17 years.

The FDA also will approve a generic version of Nexium, known as Nexium 40 mg, which is the same strength as the brand name version. It is also the same strength as AstraZeneca’s Prevacid, or Prilosec, which was the only approved drug for the treatment of heartburn in 1999.

The generic version of Nexium, known as Nexium-40 mg, will be made by AstraZeneca, which makes the drug.

In a statement, the FDA said, “The approval of this product is a milestone in the ongoing battle to maintain our relationship with the company.”

“We are pleased to have had the opportunity to share information about the potential impact of this approval on our ongoing clinical studies,” said FDA spokesman David Brennan, adding that the agency’s ongoing efforts will continue to work to ensure that patients continue to receive the most appropriate treatment for their condition, with a focus on patient safety and quality of life,” Brennan said.

The FDA also said it is pleased to announce that AstraZeneca is marketing Nexium, a generic version of Prilosec. The drug was developed and approved in the United States by AstraZeneca to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults.

Efforts by AstraZeneca to get the drug approved in the United States were previously rejected by the European Medicines Agency, which later rejected the drug, said FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.

“We’ve had a difficult time achieving the FDA approval for this drug. We believe the agency will approve it very carefully and with great care for a drug to be approved in the United States,” said Hamburg.

The FDA, which is not responsible for the decisions of the agency, is also concerned about the risk of patients switching to the drug. “In the event of a switch, our goal is to keep the patient on the medication for the shortest possible period. We’re not sure if this happens in our patients who are taking the drug.”

The agency also said that AstraZeneca has agreed to meet with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulatory agencies to discuss the potential benefits and risks of the drug. AstraZeneca’s proposal is expected to be discussed by the FDA by late May.

“We’re excited to work with the FDA to make the decision that is right for us,” said AstraZeneca chief executive David Brennan.

“It’s not a decision that we’re going to make. We’re going to continue to work with them to make sure that we are responsible for the safety and efficacy of the product,” he said.
